Port de Doëlan

From the Grands Sables beach to the port of Doëlan

This spectacular walk, which follows the wild coastline of southern Brittany, links Grands Sables beach with the picturesque port of Doëlan. Following the famous GR 34 (the Customs Officers’ Path), this 8-kilometre route offers around two hours’ walking through unspoilt coastal landscapes, amongst rocky cliffs, secluded coves and historic port buildings.

Starting on the fine sand of Grands Sables

The route begins on Grands Sables beach in Clohars-Carnoët, one of the few beaches in the region to offer such a vast expanse of white sand. From the very first steps on the coastal path, walkers are struck by the raw beauty of the coastline. The path quickly rises to overlook the ocean, offering breathtaking views of the Atlantic and, on a clear day, the Île de Groix silhouetted on the horizon.

The power of the wild coast

The stretch between the beach and Doëlan is undoubtedly one of the wildest in the area. The path winds through barren heathland, between granite rocks lashed by sea spray and small, steep coves. Here you’ll come across remnants of the maritime past, such asthe anchor of the trawler ‘Le Julien Quéré’, a reminder of the sea’s sometimes devastating power on this rocky coast. The terrain is marked by a succession of ascents and descents which, though gentle, require a degree of caution but guarantee ever-changing panoramic views.

The magical arrival at the Port of Doëlan

The approach to the port of Doëlan is via the left bank, gradually revealing this haven of peace nestled in a deep estuary. The view is striking: white houses with slate roofs are terraced on the hills, whilst fishing boats and pleasure craft bob gently on the calm water.

On arriving at the harbour, you’ll discover the two sentinels of the place: the downstream and upstream lighthouses, one green and the other red, which have guided sailors for decades. This final stop invites you to stroll along the quays or take a well-deserved break on a terrace to admire this picture-postcard setting, often cited as one of the most beautiful harbours in Brittany.
