Hike

A walk between Bélon, Aven and the sea

Distance : 7,5 kms

This walk, designed as a long loop between the two famous abers of southern Finistère, offers a striking glimpse of the wild beauty and historical heritage of Riec-sur-Bélon. In around 1 hour 50 minutes’ walk, this route takes you from the wooded banks of the Bélon to the steep cliffs overlooking the ocean, before heading into the tranquillity of the Breton countryside.

The call of the ocean and maritime heritage

The starting point is at the Château du Bélon. From the very first steps, walkers are immersed in an authentic maritime atmosphere with a view of the small harbour nestled on the opposite bank. The path first follows the Bélon, winding through lush vegetation, leading to the Pointe de Penquerneo. It is here that the landscape opens up magnificently onto the Atlantic. On the heights, the ruins of the old Fort du Bélon, perched on the cliffs, serve as a reminder of this coast’s former strategic importance and offer a breathtaking panorama of the horizon.

Between rias and hidden beaches

As you continue towards L’Aven, the scenery changes subtly. The path follows the river upstream, revealing charming properties hidden beneath lush vegetation. Here, you’ll discover the small beach of Saint-Nicolas de Port-Manech, a true haven of peace surrounded by greenery. This section of the route perfectly illustrates the contrast between the power of the ocean and the serenity of the abers.

A journey through a thousand years of history

The final part of the loop moves away from the coastline at Goulet Riec cove and heads inland. The highlight of this stretch through the countryside is undoubtedly the Keriantec covered passageway. This megalithic funerary monument, listed as a historic monument, is one of the best preserved in the region. Its dolmens and standing stones offer a fascinating insight into Neolithic architecture. To round off this experience, an oyster tasting on the terrace of Château du Bélon allows you to savour this iconic local delicacy whilst enjoying an exceptional view of the aber.
