Lettuce

Description: Lettuce is an annual plant with green or red leaves, widely grown for its crisp, tender leaves, eaten raw in salads or used as a garnish.

Sowing: in the garden, in pots

Sowing advice :

  • Direct sowing in the open ground: Sow the seeds on the surface of the soil after the last frosts, in rows 30 cm apart. Cover the seeds lightly with fine soil.
  • Sowing in pots: Sow under cover in March-April for transplanting in May, 20 cm apart in rows 30 cm apart.

Harvesting period: May to September, depending on variety

Growing: in the garden

Exposure: sunny to semi-shade

Water requirement: high

Soil type: rich in organic matter, well drained

Historical origin of the variety: Lettuce originated in the Mediterranean basin and was grown by the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. It was introduced to Europe and North America, where numerous varieties were developed.

Uses: Lettuce leaves are eaten fresh in salads, sandwiches, wraps and side dishes. They are rich in vitamins, minerals and fibre, making them a healthy and refreshing food.
