GR34 walk from Pont Aven to Port Manech

This iconic hike in southern Finistère, which follows the GR 34 trail, links the famous artists’ town of Pont-Aven with the charming harbour of Port-Manech. This route, covering around 15 kilometres, offers a complete immersion in the landscapes that have inspired so many artists, amidst mysterious woodlands, historic heritage and magnificent coastal views.

Between rivers and forests

The walk begins in the heart of Pont-Aven, where the river bubbles between granite boulders. Leaving the centre behind, the path quickly leads into peaceful wooded areas bordering the ria. Beneath a canopy of greenery, walkers can enjoy sweeping views over the water, where the masts of moored boats are reflected. This is an ideal section for appreciating the transition from freshwater to the growing influence of the sea.

The Hénan Passage: a journey through time

One of the highlights of the route is the Hénan site. Here you’ll discover a magnificent 15th-century tide mill, built of cut stone, which once used the force of the tides to turn its millstones. This perfectly restored site, with its chapel and miller’s house, is an unmissable cultural stop-off beneath the centuries-old trees.

Seafood and oyster farming

In season, stop for an oyster tasting break. Sitting on the terrace facing the estuary to savour oysters of the utmost freshness is a unique sensory experience, allowing you to taste this product renowned for its delicate nutty flavour.

Arrival at Port-Manech

The route comes to a magnificent end at Port-Manech. The narrow path opens out onto the open sea, revealing a fine sandy beach adorned with its iconic white beach huts from the Belle Époque. This contrast between the steep-sided river at the start and the infinite horizon of the Atlantic makes this walk a complete adventure, blending gastronomy, history and natural splendour.
