Against a deep midnight-blue background, by the light of his lantern, the old farmer takes his pulse, the simple, serious gesture of a man who is still measuring how fortunate he is to be in the world and how much time he has spent cultivating it. His hands, gnarled and hollowed out by the earth, have dropped the tool, but bear witness to the fact that his heart is still beating, slowly and faithfully, like the seasons he has lived through. This intimate gesture expresses lucidity rather than fear, the acceptance of a tried and tested body that has given everything.
The laterite-coloured frame underscores this scene of a farmer listening to nature and his land, which comes alive thanks to his labour.
