Tomato Marmande

Description: The Marmande tomato is an ancient variety of tomato, appreciated for its fleshy, slightly flattened, bright red fruits. This variety is known for its rich, sweet flavour, ideal for salads, sauces and cooking.

Sowing: in pots, in the ground

Sowing advice :

  • Sowing in pots: Sow under cover in March-April, at a depth of 0.5 cm, in pots filled with fine compost. Keep the soil moist. Transplant into the ground or into pots when the plants have 5 to 6 leaves, after the last frosts.
  • Sowing in the garden: Possible from May in mild climates, but generally not recommended in Brittany because of the risk of late frosts.

Transplanting period (outdoors): May, after the last frosts

Harvesting period: July to September

Growing: in the ground, in pots

Exposure: sunny

Water requirements: medium, water regularly but avoid wetting the foliage

Soil type: rich in organic matter, well drained

Plant size : 60 to 80 cm tall

Historical origin of the variety: The Marmande tomato is a traditional French variety, grown since the early 20th century. It originates from the Marmande region in south-west France.

Use: Marmande tomatoes are versatile in the kitchen. They are excellent in salads, sandwiches, sauces or simply grilled. Their dense, flavoursome flesh makes them particularly suitable for stews and stuffings.
