fond du belon

In short strides or to stroll with the c&#xrren;t

From the Guilly bridge to the Bélon port

This walk, linking Saint-Léger Chapel to Bélon Castle, invites you to discover one of the most secluded and unspoilt rias in southern Finistère. Following the meandering course of the Bélon, this route—which takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes one way—offers an enchanting interlude amidst deep woods, religious heritage and oyster-farming traditions.

A spiritual start at the Saint-Léger Chapel

The route begins at Saint-Léger Chapel, a building nestled in lush greenery that seems to have watched over the river for centuries. This starting point immediately sets the tone for the walk: calm, authenticity and serenity. From the very first steps, the path winds its way into a dense forest bordering the right bank of the Bélon. The trail meanders beneath a protective canopy, where light filters through the leaves to create an almost mystical atmosphere, so characteristic of the Breton landscape.

Along the Bélon: between land and sea

Throughout the walk, the hiker follows the river’s meandering course. The path, often running right alongside the water, allows you to observe the rhythm of the tides, which transform the landscape from hour to hour. Wooded areas alternate with small clearings offering breathtaking views of the aber. It is here that you begin to spot the oyster beds that have brought the area worldwide fame. The mix of the forest’s fresh water and the ocean’s salt water creates a unique ecosystem, particularly conducive to a wild and varied flora.

Arrival at Château du Bélon: a gourmet stop

The final stop on this walk is the Château du Bélon estate. This exceptional site overlooks the river mouth and offers spectacular views of the Atlantic and the opposite bank. To round off the walk, a stop at the château’s oyster beds is a must. Here you can sample the famous flat Bélon oysters, whose nutty flavour is the result of a delicate maturation process in the waters of the aber. This walk, accessible to all, is a true ode to the Finistère way of life, perfectly combining the raw beauty of nature with the richness of a thousand-year-old terroir.
